The Match up

This coming Saturday, September 21, the Georgia Bulldogs football team looks to square off against the Notre Dame football team. This will be the third overall meeting between these two teams. Georgia has won the previous two meetings. The first one being the 1980 Sugar Bowl, and the other being in 2017 at Notre Dame. This game is the most anticipated match up of the season for either team so far. Both teams come into this game ranked in the top ten in college football with the Bulldogs ranked third and the Irish ranked seventh in the country. This game has playoff implications since both teams have aspirations to get into the playoffs and possibly into the national championship. With a loss, either one of these team's playoff aspirations would take a big hit.

Who has the edge?

With both teams coming into this game ranked in the top ten, this looks like it should be a competitive game. The numbers paint a different picture.

  • When it comes to total yards on the season, Georgia has the edge. Georgia has just over 565 total yards on the season while Notre Dame has around 505 total yards on the season. This includes both passing and rushing yards.

  • Georgia also has the edge in yards allowed on the season. Georgia has only allowed just over 240 total yards so far while Notre Dame has allowed over 370 yards. This includes both rushing and passing yards allowed by each teams defense.

  • When it comes to points per game and points allowed per game, Georgia holds the edge in points allowed while Notre Dame has the edge in points per game. Georgia has just allowed an average of just over 7 points per game while Notre Dame has allowed just over 15. Notre Dame holds the edge in points per game with a little over 50 while Georgia has only around 49. Georgia has also played in one more game than the Notre Dame.

  • It's not hard to see that Georgia has the size and talent advantage over Notre Dame. Georgia has had top five recruiting classes over the past few years, so they have a talent advantage. Georgia also boasts one of the biggest offensive lines in all of college football. This helps tremendously in the run and passing game.

Conclusion

This game looks to be an exciting match up, but the numbers show that Georgia has the clear advantage. The experts agree, because the Bulldogs are currently around a two touchdown favorite. If Georgia gets their ground game going, look out, because that will open up their passing game. If that happens, it will be a long game for Notre Dame. Notre Dame must try and control the line of scrimmage to have a chance in this game. As we all know, anything can happen. Statistics go out the window once a game starts. We will see who will come out on top after the game on Saturday night.
