Georgia Sports Curse?

Is the curse real? Has it been lifted? As 2019 comes to a close and 2020 begins, we may find our answer.

The city of Atlanta has won only two professional sports championships...

The Atlanta Braves along with the relatively new Atlanta United FC are the only Major sports teams in Georgia to win a championship in recent memory. The Atlanta Braves accomplished this feat in 1995 with a win over the Cleveland Indians. In 2018, Atlanta United FC won the MLS cup. This was a huge deal since they won it in only their second season of existence. It had been twenty-three years since the Braves won a championship before Atlanta united won the cup. Many say that with that win, the Georgia sports curse has been lifted. We can only wait to see if they are right.

Is The curse real? If so, has it been lifted?

There are many instances in Georgia sports history that would lead people to believe that the curse is real. It appears to have impacted both professional and college sports.

Atlanta Braves

• During the 1990’s, the Braves went 1-4 in world series match-ups even though those teams consisted of many future hall-of-famers.

• The Braves have only won one playoff series since the 1999 world series.

• There have been many memorable moments that have left Braves fans with a bad taste in their mouths including the September collapse of 2011 and the infamous infield fly game of 2012.

Atlanta Falcons

• They have only appeared in two Super Bowls in their existence. They lost both of them.

• They lost the 2016 Super Bowl to the New England Patriots after leading 28-3 in the third quarter by a final score of 34-28.

Atlanta Hawks

• The Hawks have never made it to the NBA finals since being located in Atlanta. The Hawks did win a championship when they were located in St. Louis in 1958.

Atlanta Thrashers

• The Thrashers only existed for 12 years.

• The Thrashers only made one playoff appearance in their existence in 2003. They were swept in 4 games by the New York Rangers.

• The team was sold to a Canadian group that moved the team to Winnipeg where they became the Jets.

Georgia Bulldogs Football

• UGA has only won one championship in 1980.

• They have had numerous top ranked recruiting classes and have had many talented players, but they have never been able to win a championship in recent years with all of that talent.

Has the curse been lifted?

With the 2018 MLS Cup win by Atlanta United, many believe the curse has been lifted. Only time will tell, but the 2019 Braves look like they can go far in the playoffs this year. UGA football looks very strong this year. Finally, the Falcons look to get back to their winning ways of 2016 and 2017.
